High-Profile Defamation Probe Launched as Rosmah Mansor Files Police Report Over Viral New Jersey Property Allegations
A police report filed by Rosmah Mansor over viral allegations linking her to a luxury New Jersey property worth RM55 million has triggered a formal investigation. Authorities suspect a fake social media account, with police probing under multiple legal provisions including the Penal Code, Communications Act, and Sedition Act amid growing concerns over online misinformation.
Inspector-General of Police Malaysia Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail confirmed the development, stating that Rosmah Mansor has categorically denied all allegations, describing them as false, malicious, and intended to damage her public reputation. According to a report by Harian Metro, she further rejected any involvement in shell companies, offshore financial structures, or associations with individuals and entities referenced in the viral video.
Authorities stated that preliminary investigations suggest the social media account responsible for spreading the allegations is believed to be fake. The Inspector-General of Police disclosed this during a press conference held at the launch of the “Perangi Scam: Two Teams, One Goal” campaign.
He added that police have received a total of three reports related to the matter and have already recorded statements from several relevant witnesses. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is assisting in the ongoing investigation.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, reflecting the seriousness of the alleged online defamation and its potential legal consequences.
Authorities have also issued a strong warning to the public against the spread of speculation or unverified claims, emphasizing that such actions may obstruct investigations and complicate potential court proceedings.
The incident underscores the escalating challenge of digital misinformation and the legal measures being enforced to curb online defamation, as investigations continue into the origin and authenticity of the viral allegations.
